I absolutely love giving our playroom a festive touch over the holidays. It’s a chance to add some extra cheer into a space that’s all about creativity and play. But as December rolls around and we approach the end of the year, it’s also the perfect time to give the playroom a little TLC. With the holidays come an influx of new toys, which means it’s the perfect moment to declutter. Plus, let’s be real, less clutter = more play! Here are a few tips to get ahead of the holiday chaos while keeping the space exciting for your little ones.
1. Toy Edit: Keep It Simple, Keep It Fun
The first step is to edit! Look around and decide what can stay, what can be donated, an what can be packed away for later. Keep only a few of each type of toy out, and remember – less is more. The fewer toys you keep around, the more your kiddos will use them. Cluttered spaces can be overstimulating and distracting, so go for a curated selection to help spark creativity and keep the space from feeling overwhelming.
2. Toy Rotation: Keep Things Fresh
This one’s a game-changer: Toy rotation! Keep the excitement by limiting the number of toys available at any given time and update them regularly. When something new comes in (looking at you, holiday gifts!), take something old out and store it away. It’s like having a new toy collection every few weeks. Around the holidays, swap toys based on the seasons to keep the fun going all year long.
3. Toy Access: Out with the Packaging, In with the Fun
Let’s be honest, those toy boxes and excessive packaging can be a huge culprit when it comes to clutter. If possible, ditch the packaging and take things like blocks, building sets, and other toys out of their boxes. Not only does this make them easier to access, but it also cuts down on the visual clutter. The easier it is for your kids to get to their toys, the more likely they will play with them!
4. Toy Storage: Bins, Baskets, and Beyond
When it comes to toy storage, think large, soft bins or baskets without covers. These are perfect for grouping similar items together while allowing your kids to easily see what’s inside. Plus, no lid means they can empty them out for playtime and quickly toss everything back in when they’re done, making cleanup a breeze. As your little ones grow, incorporating closed storage bins can make sense for keeping things organized.
5. Toy Display: Style Meets Function
Who says toy storage can’t be stylish? There are so many unique ways to display and organize toys that are both functional and decorative. Think acrylic wall pockets, creative shelving solutions, and open book shelves. I absolutely love the look and function of a leaning wall shelf—its hooks make it easy to hang items, the horizontal bars are perfect for storing blankets, and the open shelves leave plenty of room for both toys and decor. Another favorite of mine? Acrylic wall pockets! They’re perfect for showcasing keepsake toys, special items, or even for storing toy cars, blocks, and books within easy reach when hung lower on a wall. And let’s not forget open bookshelves, which make books accessible and offer a quick, efficient way to update the space.
Adding a Little Holiday Magic
To really give your playroom a festive flair, throw in a few holiday touches—think seasonal toys, books, and even letterboards. It’s a simple way to make the space feel merry and bright without going overboard. And moms, don’t stress if you don’t have time to decorate for every season! These tips work year-round and can help you create a space your kids will adore, no matter the time of year.
