They say brothers make the best friends – and we’re hoping that holds true!
Hi friends! This one has been a long time coming and I’m so excited to finally share our shared boys’ room reveal with you! This space has been a slow and steady labor of love. Honestly, I did not want to rush the process just to “get it done,” so I took my time pulling it together, and I’m so glad I did.
As a mom of two kids, ages 3 and 5, I knew this room had to check a lot of boxes. It needed to be functional, playful, simple yet cozy, and a true reflection of who my boys are right now – adventurous, curious, and always on the move! While we added a few new pieces, the foundation of the room is actually built around things we already had – the accent wall, decorative touches, even the sofa. So, if you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll definitely recognize some familiar details, as many elements have been carried over from their nursery, playroom, and other corners of our home. It’s truly a mix of old favorites and thoughtful new finds and I think that’s what makes it feel so cozy and personal.
Starting With the Beds
The first piece I knew we needed? Beds. I naturally lean toward neutrals, but I also wanted something that felt fun for the boys and that’s how I landed on the Nestig Off Road kids beds. Truthfully, I had originally envisioned a soft, upholstered look. My boys move around a lot in their sleep. But the more I researched, the more I kept coming back to these. I had actually pinned these beds many times over the years, so the fact that I still loved them felt like a pretty good sign they were the right choice. They’re playful but still have a timeless feel, with great built-in storage, a low profile (perfect for little ones), and the quality is incredible. Once I got the boys’ enthusiastic thumbs-up, I started designing the room around these beds.
For mattresses, we went with the Twin Natural Youth Hybrid mattresses from the Leesa x West Elm collaboration (highly recommend). They’re breathable, supportive, and specifically designed for growing kids’ bodies. They are also safe, non-toxic, and made with organic cotton, wool, and natural latex; all things that were really important to me.
Now, Let’s Talk Furniture
I don’t usually believe that everything has to match. But in this case, I went for a cohesive look with the Wave Dresser and Criss Cross Side Tables from Nestig too. I loved the wood tones, clean lines, and the simple design works beautifully with the beds. The side tables were especially intentional. I wanted something lightweight, movable, and not too permanent or bulky. Side tables tend to become full of clutter, magically filled up with stickers, rocks, snacks, and truthfully, junk. It can become just an extra thing to keep clean and organized, so I decided to keep things simple. The sofa in the room is the same one from their nursery and honestly, it still works perfectly. It’s cozy for story time, lounging while the boys play, and just the right size for the space. Sometimes, when something works, you just stick with it!
Bedding Details
Bedding was the next big decision. My must-haves: soft, high-quality, easy to wash (no ironing, please!), and a print that was fun but wouldn’t overwhelm the space. Nestig’s Road Work sheet and duvet sets totally nailed it – playful without being over the top and the perfect shade of blue for the room.
And yes, I added the Big Bro and Lil Bro throw pillows – not exactly necessary, but definitely adorable. Zero regrets, even though they never seem to stay on the bed for long! I bought these knit heirloom blankets when each of the boys were born, customized with their names and it felt so special (and a little emotional!) to bring them back out again now that they have grown up so much.
The Accent Wall
For anyone new here – this accent wall has been around since the nursery days and there was no way it was coming down. Over time, we’ve updated the lettering, but the structure has remained the same and still feels just as special. The whole look came together with peel and stick wallpaper, decorative wall moldings, and custom lettering. It’s one of the first things people comment on when they see the room and it just makes it feel more unique and personal.
A Playful Corner
I wanted the gallery wall to feel playful but still put together; not overly structured or aligned. Honestly, I probably would have gone even more asymmetrical with the layout, but once those holes are in the wall… well, you know how that goes. Most of the framed art is from Nestig’s Road Work collection and the bottom two frames are from Artifact Uprising. I love these – the frames stick to the wall (no nails!), and you can just drop new prints in from the top. I plan to switch them out for the holidays, seasonal quotes, or little art prints the boys make.
One of my favorite additions is the magnetic arch wall decal that the boys love using for Magna-Tiles, to spell out words with the magnetic letters, and it’s even dry-erase compatible, but shhh! because I haven’t told them that part just yet!
The Rug We All Love
If you’ve never heard of Lorena Canals rugs, let me put you on to them. They’re a dream for kids’ rooms – super lightweight, machine washable, and the patterns are adorable without being too loud. We have two and I can’t recommend them enough. We have had this wheels rug for a while, but it fits so seamlessly in the space that you’d think it was chosen just for this room.
The Finishing Touches
Everything else – the little baskets, bins, decor, wall shelves, and accents – were things I picked up over time. Some are from their nursery, others from random shopping runs or late-night online scrolls. What I love most is how warm, personal, and cozy it feels, yet it’s still minimalistic and functional.
One of my absolute favorite parts of the room is the three-frame gallery wall above the sofa. The large prints add so much personality and really help capture who the boys are right now. Your eye just naturally gravitates toward that wall and I love that. I wanted every corner of the room to be something you’d want to walk over to and take a closer look. From the pennant flags above the dresser, to the small, intentional decorative pieces that sit on top of the dresser and side tables – everything I selected was thoughtfully chosen, holds a memory, or has a story behind it. The books, signed and framed jersey, stuffed animals, and the little decor pieces on the shelves are all things that have meaning to us and it brings me so much joy knowing this space is not just cute, but filled with little reminders of our journey so far.
It’s a space that will absolutely evolve over time, but for now, it feels just right! I’m so happy with how it turned out and the fact that it finally feels complete!
