Dressing your little ones for Indian events? Let’s be real — sometimes the kurta you ordered didn’t arrive in time, the event snuck up on you, or your little guy just isn’t feeling the fancy fits.
Enter: the Indian-inspired outfit hack! Easy, Collarless Button-Downs + Slim, Fitted Pants + Stylish Sandals. Grab the shirts 1 or 2 (or even 3) sizes up for that oversized vibe, roll the sleeves up, pair with some slim-fit pants or ribbed leggings, and throw on some cute sandals. And just like that, they’re party-ready, comfy, and cool.
Think comfort and style without breaking the bank. No, it’s not at all about skipping tradition – it’s simply about making everyday pieces feel festive, comfy, and still stylish when you need something last-minute. Let’s please put an end to this idea that boys don’t have cute outfit options – it’s simply not true! I’m going to show you some easy, desi-inspired outfit ideas that are kid-approved, stylish, and traditional, with a modern twist.
No tantrums. No stress. This trick is perfect when you’re short on time, can’t order traditional outfits, or just want something easy and versatile.
Here are my go-to pieces for creating that effortlessly stylish, Indian-inspired look for your little men:
1. Collarless Button-Downs
Collarless shirts are one of my favorite styles for little boys. When it comes to achieving that traditional look, they’re great as they give you the kurta look without the stiff, scratchy fabrics. Search for terms like “mandarin collar,” “mao collar,” or “collarless shirts” and you’ll find tons of great options. Opt for solids, subtle prints, or even embroidered patterns in fabrics such as linen, cotton, and muslin. Linen is breathable and especially great for warmer months and once Fall and Winter roll around, you’ll notice these shirts available in thicker fabrics as well. Size up for that oversized feel and a relaxed, kurta-inspired look and roll up the sleeves for a more put-together finish.
2. Slim Pants
Slim-fit linen pants, cotton joggers, or ribbed leggings are perfect for pairing with these shirts. These are available in lots of colors, but in my opinion, neutrals are best as they’ll match best with almost any top. Unlike the shirts, do not size up here. A tailored fit that hits right at the ankle looks more polished and will pair perfectly with some leather sandals. Ribbed leggings are also comfortable and here, you can brighten up the look with some color!
3. Stylish Sandals
Who says boys don’t have cute outfit options? I love styling my boys, and one way to really show and get creative with their style are through their shoes! For this look, I recommend fisherman sandals or double-strap footbed styles in leather or suede and shades like cognac or dark brown, which match everything. They’re comfy, stylish, and can be worn all summer long.
The best part about this “East meets West” look is that these pieces are reusable and versatile – ideal for everything from Indian events to summer vacations. They mix and match easily, giving you more bang for your buck, and they keep your little ones happy because comfort = no outfit battles.
Now, this look might not work for all Indian events, such as wedding ceremonies, but it is perfect for pre-wedding events like mehndis, pithis, or festive occasions like Diwali parties and pujas.
Boy mamas – what do you think? Would you try these easy, Indian-inspired looks for your little ones?
