It’s time to Treat Yo Shelves…and by your shelves, I mean your kid’s playroom or nursery shelves! If you have a blank wall and are not sure what to do with it, create a space that’s not only stylish and functional, but educational too. A reading nook is a cozy and fun addition to any kids’ area. I love the idea of displaying books that are within reach and when it also serves as a decorative and organizational storage solution – that’s a win-win in my book!
Not sure where to start? Here’s a list of some classic books and a few of our family favorites that will give you a good foundation as you build out your own collection.
Keep reading for four simple ways you can create a cozy reading nook for your little ones!
1. Create a Cozy Seating Area
Consider your space and look for soft seating options such as large cushions, chairs, or mattresses. We love our nugget comfort and adding a few cozy items like stuffed friends, some cute throw pillows, and soft blankets make the area inviting and comfortable. Pottery Barn Kids Anywhere Chairs are also popular, as well as these additional options.
2. Display Book Covers Facing Outwards
Floating shelves and picture ledges are the best way to outwardly display books. In our playroom, we used three 45 ¼ “ Mosslanda picture ledges from IKEA but I’ve also linked some other similar options here. Displaying book covers outwardly and clearly visible (think bestsellers in a bookstore), allow you to add pops of color to the room, make the books easily accessible and easy to put back, but most importantly, pique interest and encourage your little ones to try new titles.
3. Update with Decorative Accents
This is the fun part! Adding a few decor items, such as colorful or themed garlands, artwork, toys, plants, or letter boards with fun quotes add character and make the space fun and inviting! I also love to use banners, pennant flags, or wooden accents like these from Etsy!
4. Keep Things Moving
Update the area every now and then to keep things interesting and feeling new. This can be done by simply rotating the books, switching up the toys and accessories, or decorating along with different holidays, seasons, or themes, like I love to do!
